TikTok Shop: Time to “Sleigh”

Robyn Mason, Research Manager at Mustard, on how the time is NOW for retailers to be all over TikTok shop.

In the lead up to Christmas, all retailers should keep a close eye on shifting shopping behaviours. This year, all eyes are on TikTok Shop, a platform poised to shake up festive retail strategies. According to a recent survey by Mustard, almost a quarter of UK shoppers say they are “probably” or “definitely” planning to buy Christmas presents from TikTok Shop.

Considering that TikTok Shop only launched in September 2023, this holiday season will be its first real test since its phenomenal rise in popularity over the last year. TikTok predicts that this Christmas will be its biggest retail moment to date, driven by the rapid growth in live shopping sessions and a projected 58% YOY increase in ad spend revenue from retail and ecomm clients on TikTok over the Christmas period in the UK.

Why Is TikTok Shop Gaining Traction?

Gen Z has embraced TikTok as much more than just another social media app; it’s a lifestyle platform where entertainment, discovery, and shopping converge. Unlike traditional e-commerce, TikTok Shop offers a seamless experience that blends engaging content with effortless purchasing. Think of it as impulse-buying meets influencer marketing—right in the palm of your hand.

As Christian James, Managing Director of the IF Agency, put it at the Prolific North Live event last month, TikTok Shop is like a “Tamagotchi” for retailers. It requires constant care and attention to thrive. Brands that have already invested in building a strong presence on TikTok Shop are reaping the benefits, while those lagging behind may find it increasingly difficult to catch up.

The Gen Z Effect

It’s no surprise that Gen Z are leading this charge. Mustard’s survey reveals that 16% of Gen Z shoppers “definitely” plan to use TikTok Shop for Christmas shopping, while 35% are say they “probably” will. For retailers, this represents a significant opportunity to tap into a generation that prioritizes convenience, trends, and the endorsement of trusted influencers.

But TikTok’s influence doesn’t stop at gifts. The survey also found that 20% of Gen Z shoppers view TikTok as the social media platform most likely to influence their food and drink purchases this Christmas. Whether it’s recipes or restaurant recommendations, TikTok is shaping holiday consumption habits in ways no other platform currently can.

What Does This Mean for Retailers?

For retailers, the rise of TikTok Shop is a wake-up call. The platform is the UK’s fastest-growing shopping channel, and those who have already nurtured their TikTok presence are well-positioned to capitalize on this shift. Brands with creative strategies—leveraging influencers, livestreams, and engaging content—are turning followers into customers.

Retailers hesitant to embrace TikTok Shop risk missing the boat. As James advocates from his experience of helping clients shape and deliver strategies for TikTok Shop, success on the platform requires commitment, creativity, and a willingness to adapt to its unique ecosystem. This holiday season, TikTok Shop will likely be a game-changer for those who understand its potential.

As we enter the busiest shopping season of the year, TikTok Shop is proving itself to be a serious contender in the retail landscape. For researchers, it’s an intriguing example of how social media is reshaping consumer behaviour. For retailers, it’s an opportunity to engage with a young, trend-driven audience in a way that feels fresh, authentic, and impactful.

As TikTok turns “likes” into sales, the real question is: can your brand afford to sit this one out?
